Fault Code 12 on Odometer!!
« on: November 28, 2017, 03:08:30 PM »
I searched here and see that this means my "crankshaft position sensor is toast (engine is dead)". This is a 2014 Stratoliner Deluxe. I assume this is a BIG deal ..  :(  :( or could this have been brought on by something else. Here is the background. Any input is greatly appreciated...

On a 160 mi ride..I started out and tried to start her up. Hit the start switch..just clicking sound. Turned her oin and off nad then it started up. 100 miles later stopped for gas...when I went to start same thing..just clicking. Turned her on and off a few times. Started up. Got her home but now it wont start at all. Just the clicking sound. After a few tries holding down the started button for a while I received the error code 12.

Is this a catastrophic issue or shall I still start step by step to replace 1) battery 2) starter module next to battery 3) starter motor? Battery is at 12.4 V rest but is older... Ugggg

I would definitely look at the battery first. That's what it sounds like to me. Sounds like its just not holding the amps to start the bike. Should be able to take it to a local auto parts place and have them check it.

Jump it from a car. If it still clicks it is not the battery.

Update: New battery installed. just click click when I hit the starter. Is the starter relay next? I checked and there is 12V going into the starter motor. Does that mean I should go direct to the cranshaft sensor or still replace the relay?

I would check the crankshaft position sensor coupler.

Im useless at this. Is this easily accessible or do I have to take it in to the stealership and have them take the engine apart?

In my defense I did look at the service manual and saw how you can check it and the resistance but cant find where it lives... :-\

Have you a maintenance manual?  I don't think the lead in question is buried that deep.

But, if you can't do it easy-- this is a new bike, right?  Take that sumbitch back, no?

UPDATE: Bike still not starting. Check the crankshaft sensor switch module resistance and the ohms were fine. So its not the:

1) Battery - new replaced
2) Started relay - checked
3) Crankshaft sensor - correct ohm resistance
4) Starter Motor - How do I know..because I used a jump starter on it, placing the negative on the bike ground and the positing on the battery. She started right up.

There was a lot of sparking on the ground and on the battery positive which is weird. Turned her off tried again - noooo dice.

Wont repeat and still wont start.  >:( >:(

This is getting weird. Can a ground fault exist and stop it from starting??
