PASSING LIGHTS NOT WORKING

I know a few years ago AnthonyD did a write up on a wiring harness meltdown. I have an 08 Strat with passing lights that have not worked since I bought the bike. I checked the fuse in the headlight bucket and it's good. I will be replacing it with a blade style very soon. I have power at the switch on the handlebars, but nothing to the wires in the bucket. I haven't removed the metal plate retaining the harness yet. Is there a relay or another fuse that I might be missing or should be looking for? I am going to be replacing the incandescent lamps with 4-1/2" LED pods. But I would like to get power to the cans first. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    The headlight and passing lamps only get power after the engine has started up.  They continue to get power after you kill the engine so long as you leave the key turned to the on position.

    Had the bike running when I checked for power. I have power to the switch, but nothing to the lights themselves. Bulbs are good, glass fuse is good. Just wanted to know if there was another fuse or relay inside the headlight bucket that I should look for. Like I said before, I have not yet removed the retaining plate inside the bucket to reveal the bulk wiring. I am really trying to avoid tearing into the bars.

    I don't *think* there's another fuse or relay to be looking for.

    On mine, they were put together with a 1/4" spade plug one-into-two splitter kind of adapter - I had trouble with power blinking out on the lights before the great "my headlight bucket melted" adventure because of that thing - the spade plugs were loose and the connection was intermittent. Not sure if it came with the original install kit or not as I didn't put them in.

    I've been ALLLLL up in that wiring behind the retaining plate, it's not that scary............  :)

    Thanks Anthony, I had the same loose spade 2-1 issues. I replaced that with a more solid connection. Looks like I'll be digging into the wiring this winter. Was hoping it was just the fuse, but not so lucky, lol. Going to be upgrading to LED on these as well, so might as well dig in. I also replaced the glass fuse with a spade type holder. Anyone have to pull wires through the bars? Am I in for a major headache? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Looks like I'm searching for a short or broken wire now. :cus:

    The LED upgrade's a piece of cake - you've got 2 sets of wires in the bucket (upper and lower) - just cut & cap one off and use the other.

    If you've got power at the switch you *probably* won't have to pull wires through the bars - at least I wouldn't START there  :-\

    There's a TON of connectors in the bucket connecting the wiring harness that runs alongside the tank to everything in there. Hopefully maybe just one of those needs to be replaced - tracing a broken wire is real PITA  >:(

    So the ones you did buy are a direct bolt in to the factory driving light buckets?

    Yes, BUT - I had changed the trim ring on my buckets out to the "frenched" style for the looks (used a Harley part) - can't confirm how they'd look or fit with the stock trim rings.
