battery dead?
« on: June 03, 2017, 05:02:03 PM »
Attempted the first ride of 2017. Left bike on trickle charger.
Turned key on and stereo started playing, guage sweep ok, then pushed start. Everything went dead.  No crank, no lights, nothing. Stereo wont play.
all fuses good, including the 50amp. Battery says 13.45 but I had the trickle charger on the battery right before testing so that might be residual.
I ordered a new battery but wanted to know if I am missing something simple.

Probably not.

You could inspect the tightness of battery's ground wire connection.  You could get the battery load-tested at your local auto parts store.

But, odds are, if your battery is old (I define five to ten years as "old"), then yeah, that's almost certainly the problem.

The battery is only 4 years old but spends a lot of time sitting in the garage with trickle charger. The trickle charger is still charging this morning. My guess is the battery is toast. Unles my Battery Tender is bad which wouldnt surprise me. This would be my second Battery Tender in the last 5 years lol

Keep the meter probes on the battery when you hit the start button, this will show ya how much voltage drop when starting.  And yes, could have been a surface voltage you read.
If it ain't rainin, I'm ridin!

I'm changing out my battery as it's showing signs of weak starts.  When I hit the button everything goes dark for a second or two, the engine cranks real slow but everything comes back after the bike starts. I keep it on the tender in the winter time but not in the summer as this is my prime vehicle for work and leisure.

Our 'liners are notoriously fickle for any variance in supplied charge. New battery will most likely fix it all up.

A battery tester is a good investment from my experience.

finally got the correct Yuasa  and installed. Worked like a champ.
The guy I bought bike from claimed he had just replaced the battery and it was from the dealer.
The bad battery was a cheap Scorpion. Didn't know the dealer sold junk like that.

Kind of funny (but not really) as my strat has done the se thing, Took it off tender, turned the key on everything looks good, hit the start and it does half a roll and the lcd screen on the spedo goes blank. When I let go of the starter the speedo has gone back to mph (in Canadan so have in kph). Hit the start and seems to start ok rest of the day. Let m e know if changing the battery really fixed your problem. Thanks. Wayne.
