HELP NEEDED REGARDING SPAM

All,

One of the members of the site is getting inundated with SPAM email which "appears" to be coming from this site.  Please rest assured that my email server has not been hacked and the email is not coming from StratolinerDeluxe.com. 

Based on the sample email they provided the email address is being spoofed.  A hacked email account means someone is literally using your email address to send email.  A spoofed account means someone is sending emails from their own email server and modifying the header information to make it "look" as if its coming from your email account.  Spoofing is not always a bad thing, but in this case it definitely is.

Please let me know if you any of you are getting spam that appears to be coming from this site.  I have been running forms for several years now with literally thousands of members and this is the first time I've had this complaint.

Ace do you maintain a SPF record for the site?  If not, many mail systems will look up the SPF record and if the mail senders domain does not match that of the SPF record it will treat it as spam.

A spoofed email address is different.  I have the ability to send an email and make it "appear" as if it came from another address.  Let's pretend your email address is grumpy@hotmail.com.  I can send an email to Swomack that contains advertisements for widgets and make it look like the email came from grumpy@hotmail.com.  That's where the problem comes in...someone is getting junk mail and they believe it is coming from my site, but it isn't.  For all I know they have a virus on their computer that is scanning their email box and sending them emails that look like they are coming from trusted sources.  Make sense?

The only email users will get from this site is registration and PM notifications, password reset emails, when requested and newsletters, which I do not send out very often.

I really believe this issue is specific to the user and is not related to this site in any way, so I am checking to see if anyone else if having any issues and trying to determine what course of action I have if any.

Ace, I AM getting those SPAM mails... they come into my Navy e-mail address, and are going directly to my Junk Mail box, but I seem to be getting several of them each week.  I'll have to look on Monday to give you more details, but they look like Spam for sure!

Ace,  I will send you a PM as well, but I am still getting SPAMs.  I have about 9 of them thqat I can forward you, just send me your e-mail address.  Sorry i didn't get to you yesterday, had a shoot storm of work to deal with at the office, and didn't have a chance tyo open the Strat-D page...   ::)
