I have never personally dealt with either Yamaha corporate or a Yamaha dealership.

My understanding, which comes only from reading on the forums, is that your outcome will depend largely on if the dealer "goes to bat" for you, as to dealing with a failure after your warranty period.  My thinking is that the selling dealer might be the best bet.

Their offer was they would cover the parts (about $700.00)
No.  $700 is what it would cost you to buy the parts from them at full MSRP.  That is a far different number than what they would actually be paying.  And you can get the parts for half that at places like yamahasportsplaza.com

It's good that they are at least willing to cover the parts, but I would advise not to settle for it unless you exhaust all other options.

I've never cracked open the case on one of these myself but I think that is what I'd be doing if I were in your position.

Going to try one more option, and then see if I can go higher.  Yamaha corp pretty much told me to pound sand and that it is not a negotiation. I should be lucky they offered anything.!  Just floored me.  Cant believe that. I thought they would cover most of the cost, with a small amount being passed to the customer.  Guess thats just not the case!

They attribute the problem to the bike sitting at the selling dealer for a year before I purchased it.
Oh, and this part is bullsh!t because it is not uncommon for these bikes to spend a year or more at a dealer.  For example, mine is an '09 and I bought it in Oct of '11.

People have had issues with lifters on these bikes, but never the type of trouble you describe.  Sometimes the lifters just don't pressurize correctly so you get knocking.  Switching to a different oil and or replacing the lifter solves the issue and I've never heard of anybody messing up an actual cam like this.

Hopefully the dealer can get them commit to a little more assistance than what the previous offer was.  Then maybe we can proceed.  The Yamaha tech at their corp said it was nothing that I did.  Basically lot rot....Why am I responsible then.? Just does not make sense to me.!

I agree.  If they know that it was their handling of the bike prior to you buying it then I think they should cover it.

I think I would try to switch it around on the dealer.  Pay for the $700 for oil and parts and have the dealer pick up the tech / labor cost for both the repair and oil change. After all, he has techs on standby paying their hourly rate anyway.   I can assure you the $1200 is at their standard shop rate, which is probably marked up 50%.  Even offering to cover the $700 in parts, with what their actual discounted dealer cost is and the mark up on their labor rate, there not out anything.

SO....interesting development.....I called the dealership today, and they told me the cam casting was messed up from the factory.  which could have caused poor fuel economy., and all the popping I have been having.  I didn't put 2 and 2 together until today for some reason.  It pops all the time, and I was very excited to get more than 20-25 mpg on my bike.  Just kinda thought it was normal.  I really don't want to push the envelope on this, and I don't want to sound like I'm whinning, but shouldn't this fall on Yamaha's a$$ and not mine.???  Just looking for your input?!!!!!

I called the dealership and asked for pictures of the damaged parts and I now have them. Hopefully when Yamaha sees the parts, they will take care of the whole thing....How the heck do I put them on here??? Cant figure out how to shrink them to a usable size.....

Wow! you should be getting at least in the high 30's for mpg. I havent heard of anyone having issues with the cam casting. Must have been made on a friday afternoon. I would get any documentation you can from the dealer and go to Yamaha with it.

Utility programs exist that can shrink photographs.  I've never actually done it, but here is a link to try.

If I want to upload them to the sight, I usually open them in Paint and resize them. You can then right-click and select "Properties" to check how big they are.

OK, so Yamaha offered to cover the parts if I would cover the labor.  Turns out after I informed Yamaha of the bad cam casting(which the dealership informed them of as well) they would not budge.  They told me over and over" We can not help any more than that" Guess it really pisses me off that it went down like this.  I am going to keep this one til I get ready to get another, but I will never again purchase another Yamaha product.  I can't believe the audacity of some of the people I spoke to.  Two of my very good friends work for H-D and told me that there is no way H-D would have let something like this happen. It would have been taken care of right off jump street!!  Guess some companies don't care after that warranty is done....SAD!

And some people make grandiose claims based off of one experience. I've always owned Yamaha products, from motorcycle to ATV's and dirtbikes, and have never had a single problem working with the authorized dealer I go to for all of my work. In fact, when I was having problems with the charging system on my R6, they actually asked me if I would like them to try and get me a refund for the three batteries the bike ended up frying before I finally took it in. They managed to do so, (which they needed to get approval for from corporate or whatever), and deducted them from the price of the repairs.

Now I guess I don't really know if you're conversing with corporate or an authorized dealer, but my experiences have always been fantastic. And yet my brother had to jump around a while until he found an authorized shop for his Harley that would actually work with him. Everyone has their experiences, and makes large claims based off single, isolated occurrences.

Will I be buying another Yamaha? Not a motorcycle, but that's because they're basically giving up on their big bikes.
