Daymaker led projection head lamp
« on: December 11, 2016, 10:11:59 pm »
Just wondering if anyone has tried installing the daymaker led projection headlamp ina stratoliner deluxe?  I'm looking for a bright plug and play replacement for the stock headlight that doesn't require alteration to the bike. Thanks in advance, andy

I have not seen a daymaker that will fit the Liner's oddly shaped headlight bucket

That's what I was thinking but one website lists the 5 3/4" as a direct replacement so I wanted to ask, the website must be mistaken.  My understanding is there is not much room in the bucket so high powered leds with cooling fins are out as well? I'm guessing bright halogens are the best options?

I was told that Daymaker makes one for the unique shape of the Stratoliner but it is a custom order and costs somewhere around $300.00.

I will have to contact the manufacturer to see if they do make one.  I figured it would be pricey but due to vision issues stemming from a childhood disease I really need something brighter then the standard halogen.

Hid are illegal unless you put it in a projector lens. In a reflector lens, what we have, they just throw light randomly and blind. You do not want to blind oncoming traffic. Try http://store.candlepower.com/mohirbuba.html. It won't match color but it is bright. High beam try http://store.candlepower.com/osraulhiouh7.html

Keep in mind that the headlight is not the only available source of light.

I purchased a low and high beam LED kit for the 2012 strat.  I got one small ballast inside the bucket and i had to put one outside the bucket.  They are definitely much brighter than stock.

What LED kits did you use? I've been interested in this mod for years, but never felt the available tech was up to the task. Has that finally changed?

I've checked with Daymaker and Custom Dynamics, neither make a headlight to fit the Stratoliner. LED replacements, with decent output, also will not fit due to cooling requirements (fan on the rear of the bulb). There are some LED replacement bulbs that are a direct fit (no cooling fan), but their output rating is less than what one of my flashlights. Also found LED has very directional output, so just a Hi and lo beam setup will not give good coverage. Daymaker and Custom Dynamics both add additional LED's to fill where the main LED's do not cover. What I'm thinking is taking a 7" Daymaker or Custom Dynamics from a HD and making an adapter of some sort to mount a 7" HD headlight inside the Stratoliner housing. The drawings I found of the Daymaker makes it seem like there will certainly be enough depth clearance inside the housing. Haven't got anything on the Custom Dynamics yet, but the HD shop says the Custom Dynamics is WAY brighter than even the Daymaker. Talked to a fabrication guy I know and he is sure we can do it. If we do it I'll be sure to post LOTS of pictures and maybe even a blueprint if it works out. The bad thing is it's not going to be cheap. I've decided I'm not going to butcher my current headlight, so I'll have to buy a housing, minimum $300 even on ebay, plus the Daymaker itself is over $400 for a new one. I don't wish to use an older model because of the advances in LED's over the last few years have been extraordinary. I want the most up-to-date setup out there.

There is nothing obnoxious about brighter lights that are properly focused and properly aimed.

Hey Dblboinger, I really like where you are going with this. I've been inside my headlight too many times to remember trying to get better lighting. Ordered a set of HID's just to get some light down the road and am waiting for them to come in. I want to put some additional driving lights on it also and am looking at Kuryakyn Constellation setup, but cant find out if there is a mounting bracket that will fit the Strat Deluxe. Please Please Please keep us posted on this project and wishing you the best of luck with it. There are so many lighting options out there now that somebody must have something to help us out. Anyway keep up the good work and I'll keep watching this post.
