Title: Stratoliner Deluxe Drive Belt and Rear Tire Replacement
Post by: kampcool on May 31, 2012, 06:19:36 pm
All Done! Questions,  Comments, and Tips are appreciated, and welcome

I took over 110 photos of this process, will organize and post by this weekend!  It was actually a pleasure (except for the wallet).   This bike is a dream to work on, compared to the Vstar1100..   EASY PEASY!!

I did this with NO MANUAL!  I JUST DID IT MY WAY.  VERY DOOABLE.  I GIVE IT A 6 OUT OF 10, TOPS.  THE ONLY REASON IT RATES THAT HIGH, IS BEACAUSE YOU MIGHT NEED A HAND, AND I did it SOLO.

EVERY LIFT AND JACK ARE DIFFERENT.  THIS IS HOW I GET MINE IN THE AIR, AND SUPPORT IT FOR REAR WHEEL REMOVAL.  (V-STAR 1100 PROVEN)

First Thing I did was to remove the saddle bags, and store them in the back of my Cherokee for saftey.  Then I removed the Bag Skirting connector in the back (go ahead and take it all the way off), I eventually had to.

If you see this in GREEN, its for the belt removal process, and you can skip for just the rear tire swap.    Here I just removed my drive pulley cover.

Since this was my first time doing this proceedure, and I was just feeling my way thru this, I jotted down some measurements, (realizing some of these might change due to the new belt install).   This gave me a great idea of how much of a "tolerance" I had to play with from side to side with the original setup (tracking).    After this whole proceedure was done, I was with in .010 of an inch, of the original setup.

This is the bolt that locks your tracking adjustment bolt into position, loosen it a little then you can release the adjusters tension, and the bracket (both sides of bike)

Ensure the rear caliper bracket is free (no bolts), and remove the axle from the bike, and catch those bearing caps, as you recieve the weight of the tire and wheel from the bike.

After you remove this big swing arm bolt, the swing arm can be lowered down out of the way enough to get the belt out.  Simple, really.

Everything goes back together in reverse order pretty much the same way, but I wanted to show the trick I used to get the rear wheel back on, and how I set my tracking.  The caliper mount was a little tricky so I did THIS:   I ziptied it into location, and used a 9/16 temporarally to hold it at the frame hub area.

Then I left the left hand side bearing cap off and installed the wheel into its correct location, inserted that 9/16 into the right hand side of the wheel, and jacked the wheel up "cockeyed" just enuff to get the cap on like this:

Then I went on to set my tracking/belt tension.  I went with my orginal measurements, and fine tuned it by rolling the tire like the bike was moving forward, and watching the belt.  I adjusted my wheel alignment tensioner so that the belt naturally wanted to ride towards the center of the pully (off the side-wall of the front pulley)

Of course I double checked all my bolts for tightness, and made sure my back brakes were seating before I took her out today.   I stayed offf the major free-ways, and started on the local side streets, stopping often, and checking stuff out.  I kept the radio off, listening and feeling my way with her, before I hit any hard pulls or speed above 45mph.      Got about 150 miles on her today, and I am very pleased with how this went.

If any of you guys know  any tips, have any questions or comments here, feel free to add.   Ill be in the wind all day tommorrow, but will check back in here from time to time.

Yep, if you got allotta bolts to tighten and want to make sure you remember you did each and every one.....take a black magic marker and do a dot or slash on them as you go.

what i usually do when im doing something with a lot of bolt torques is hit them with a white paint marker after torquing them. DOT is gunna start making all the districts do that on the buses soon for wheels and stuff, so I got used to it pretty quick lol

That's a great idea.  Some of these jobs can run long and with distractions it would help to know which ones you've addressed. Only thing is, what about the second time you are in it.  Won't the mark still be there?

Take the mark off or use some other kind of marking loke a dot or "X". Use a marker that will only mark it for you. What ever works.

O.K, heres the deal.  The above pic, is the belt inspection window on our lower belt cover.    Each line increment = .20 of an inch!

When our bike is on the kickstand, the belt is allowed to move .30" - .51" (1.5 LINES - 2.5 LINES)  (UNDER 10LBS OF FORCE, WITH A BELT TENSION TOOL)

When our bike is on a lift, with back tire in the air, the belt is allowed to move .55" - .83" (2.7 LINES - 4 LINES) (UNDER 10LBS OF FORCE, WITH A BELT TENSION TOOL)

Kampcool do I still have to remove the tire if I only need to change the belt? Can I just loosen the adjusters and push the tire foward then lower the swingarm. Sorry guys I'm just getting started doing my own service.Shop wanted $210 for install.

Hey Cobra, I went back and forth on your question in my head, and I dont see any reason why you would have to remove the rear wheel for the belt replacement.   This will save you alot of aggrivation and time , as the rear caliper mount and wheel reinstallation can be a pain.     Just remove your adjusters like you stated, and slide that puppy forward........

Have fun, and good luck,........... you got  it!       8)

Kampcool, great post. question (1) why did you replace the belt, was it time , miles or damage. I think changing the rear break pads when changing the tire is a great idea. (2) when you change the pads for the brakes did you do anything to the rotor,  mine feel a little rough compared to the front rotors. (3) did you have the dealer change out the tire for you.

Thanks for the reply. I still had to drop the tire. It made it easier after dropping the swing arm. Yes,the rear caliper mount is a pain to put on.

Picked up a road chunk

#2 Have never changed my pads yet... front or rear (still lots of shoe at this posting)  I would inspect the rotors with a micrometer, and see how bad they were worn if it were time.  (EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT!!! So Keep a close eye on those pads, guys....)

#3  I take my Tire and wheel to a local Cycle shop(NON-YAMAHA DEALERSHIP), and trust them to perform the mounting and balancing, for now.

Steve,,,, If your rear brakes "feel rough", you should investigate by checking to see how those pads are wearing (ensuring eveness, and making sure there is no signs of any foriegn debri, causing gouges, or irregularities in the pad and rotor).    Do like Grumpy suggested and  blow the brakes clean with compressed air (outside), and clean your rotor with some break cleaner on a rag.    Brake cleaner KILLS paint!

Very good post. Thanks for the pictures and instructions. I recently had a rock in my belt, looked almost just like yours. Mine was on the outer 1/3 of the belt. I got the rock out, no major damage to pulley, so I continued to ride with hole in belt. Lasted about 500 miles then broke. I just ordered a HD 65t (wikiliner) pulley from ebay and will be following your post on putting the new belt on. Anyone have preference between Dayco and Gates belts. I have always had good luck with Gates belts and hoses, but have no problem going with Dayco. Anything but Yamaha belt$$$.

I guess I am a little confused by some of the info I've read and seen on the LinerWiki.

If I buy a less expensive replacement belt (Harley or Dayco for example), can I still use the OEM pulley?

My belt took a pretty sizable rockstrike (looked just like pic above) and while my dealer said it *could* be okay for years to come, i don't want to take any undue risks and have been considering a replacement.

Not sure where you are getting confused.  http://www.linerwiki.com/index.php?title=Belt states the size of the stock pulley and belt and lists 3 belts that are that size.  It then says that if you are looking for info on the pulley conversion that you need to go to a different page.
Title: Re: Stratoliner Deluxe Drive Belt and Rear Tire Replacement
Post by: Madmatt on October 26, 2012, 04:41:23 pm
I wasnt confused so much by what the Wiki said, but more about what people that have referenced the Wiki go on to say when they talk about picking up one of those non Yamaha belts.

I have seen several mention getting a different belt then talk about needing to replace the pulley as well.

Based on purely what the wiki said, it seems like any of those three belts are compatible match for the stock pulley. So i was a little confused by why someone would want to change the pulley. I suppose they were using the oppertunity to put a new belt to go with one with less teeth as well, which I do realize would require a different pulley.

I guess I just want to be perfectly clear that if I get a Dayco Panther: DS-197002 that it's going to work without any further changes to my existing stock pulley.

In the end, I will probably end up just paying the extra money and get an OEM one...

Two completely different issues.  The reason that some people want to change the pulley is not to use cheaper belts, the reason for changing the pulley is to change the ratio.  It basically makes every gear "taller" and according to most reports it results in a couple hundred lower RPM when running at freeway speeds.
Title: Re: Stratoliner Deluxe Drive Belt and Rear Tire Replacement
Post by: Jeff'sLiner on October 27, 2012, 03:16:10 am
Madmatt, I am going with the 65t pulley for the reason KenBerry mentions, I want a lower RPM at cruising speed, from what I understand it reduces RPM around 7-8%. The OEM pulley is 70t. I am going with the Dayco Panther 133t. You are correct the Dayco Panther: DS-197002 with 136t is the OEM subsitute. I have read of people having great luck with Dayco belts on modified liners, so that and being more or less on a budget/married with kids is good enough for me.

All you guys are most welcome, and I am appreciative that my posts helped.  I knew (early), that if we shared (IN DESCRIPTION), we would add membership, and knowledge.  I still don't know as much as I should about the Stratoliner, but my knowledge increases here, with membership.   I just find the wiki's too dry, and cant "take it all in", like I see here.

I have plans for a several other "How-To's", but have been extremely busy with a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Head, and a 2003 Harley Ultra referb/upgrade.  I love the site members here, and the Stratoliners First!!! (best bike I have ever owned).

I would say that, unless you live next door to an HD dealership, or you REALLY want a Yami OEM belt, then you want this:
Dayco Panther: DS-197002

Which can be had from these folks:

http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DAYCO%2DPANTHER%2DBELTS&CartID=

It's the seventh one down the list.

I wanted to thank the OP for this very useful post about rear tire/belt removal and installation.  I was at my wits end with trying to reinstall the rear wheel with that PITA rear brake caliper falling off.  With his suggestion of ziptying and using a socket to hold it in place then removing the left washer I followed the remainder steps and the tire is installed just before the rain started.  I will button up the rest of the bike tomorrow.  Thanks Kampcool.
