Which seat to get?
« on: May 07, 2012, 10:03:22 PM »
Hey all,

So i just plunked down the $600 for the ultimate seats, got them here today and after 200 miles on them, will be sending them back.  Don't get me wrong, they are nice seats, but not $600 nice.  They feel slightly more padded but it feels like the bucket area its too short for my rear end.  I want to get something that is slightly more comfortable than stock (ie. wider and softer).  Same goes for the passenger seat as well.  I know there have been some previous posts on this topic, more or less, but I wanted to see what everyone's updated opinions are.  Right now I'm looking at the Comfort Cruise and Mustang Vintage Wide Solo sets but am open to other thoughts and ideas.  I'd want to keep the price at $800 max which I think would cover most seats.  Thanks in advance!

I went from a stock seat on my 950 Tourer, which was so uncomfortable to the stock seat with the strat.  And you know what, I couldn't be happier with it.  But I understand where you are coming from.  I think there are alot of variables that come with seats and the riders that plop their rearends in them.  Good luck in your search.

I went with the Ultimate Lowrider, and it worked perfect. You may want to try the Lowrider. Also you can check into the Danny Gray Airhawk seats with the adjustable air control built in.

I had the Mustang solo with the riders back rest for 4 years on my HD and it was the best purchase I made for my bike.
I highly recommend it.

Was going to buy that seat but my Wife and Kids told me not to buy it because that's what they want to get me for Fathers Day this year.  Can't wait to get it on my bike.

Very nice.  Let me know when you get it if it lowers you in the saddle at all.  I want to be just a little bit lower in the saddle, and be able to inflate the seat to adjust for hot spots when/if they occur.

If I pull the trigger on one of these it'll probably be next year.  I am thinking of maybe just getting a beadrider for long trips until then.

So this should interest those of you interested in the Danny Gray Airhawk seats (thanks Sink for the initial post prompting me to look into these).

After my issue with the Ultimates, I wanted to try the seats out before buying.  Danny Gray headquarters is in Santa Ana, CA (just 90 minutes from me) so I decided to call them to ask if I could sit on a seat there to see if I was interested.  I spoke with Sherry and she told me to come on down...so I did.  I went there and they went and found an Airhawk Big Seat Solo to try on the bike.  It was a much better fit although it moved me a couple inches closer which I wasn't too keen on (I'm 6'1" so the dimensions are pretty good for me with the stock seat).  As I was taking a tour through the manufacturing area with Sherry, she spotted a Long Haul 2up sitting with no mounting hardware on it (if you check the Danny Gray site, it says they only have the Weekday 2up for the Strats, but...) so she handing it to one of the people on the line and asked them to put some hardware on it for my bike.  About 10 minutes later I had a Long Haul 2up to try on the bike.  It still seats me a little closer but not as much so it was definitely worth a try.

So I asked Sherry about their return policy and explained to them about my experience with having to return the Ultimate Seat.  Her response... (and I'm paraphrasing) "Don't worry about it.  Take it out for a week or so and if you like it, you can buy it and we will ship your stock seat back to you.  If not, bring it on back and don't sweat a thing."  That's right, I have the seat now to try out, no purchase, deposit or anything.  She just had me write my name and phone number on a piece of paper.  She didn't look at my license or write down my plate number (I have no plates yet) or anything.  They were the coolest group of people.

So for those of you living in SoCal and don't mind taking the trip there, know that you can try out their seats with almost no hassle.  I'll follow up with more info on my thoughts about the seat in a few days after I get to try it out a bit.  In the mean time, here are a couple pictures on it on the bike.

The seat looks great! It appears to be a bit lower than stock...is it?

Wow Airkoneck, that is some experience!  So nice to hear they were so accommodating.  How much will that seat cost you in the end?  Is it an air seat?  Are you thinking you're gonna keep it?

Truthfully, the shape seems exactly the identical to my Corbin dual tour seat.  I mean your seat has much nicer stitching in the saddle, and there appears to be a backrest slot behind the driver's saddle, mine has it for the passenger, which is what I needed for my wife, but otherwise the seats look quite similar...

I know Corbin's are a litte overly expensive, but once broken in, mine is amzingly comfortable, and did move me slightly closer, as yours seems to...

So how about a review bro?
