What is the scoop on a 65T swap?
« on: July 24, 2014, 03:21:35 pm »
Okay what is the scoop?
I was looking at classified and saw stock pulley and belt for sale?
The seller said he just did the 65T swap. What the heacka is this. I assume it is like adding a larger or smaller sprocket to a chain bike for better gas mileage, cruising at a lower RPM, getting more low-end power and maybe a better ¼ mile speed?
If you could once again educate me I would totally appreciate it!!!

The stock rear pulley is a 70t. I put a 65t Harley pulley and 133t belt on mine. It lowered my highway rpm @ 300. On county roads I'm rarely out of 4th gear. Me likey.

Has anyone done a front pulley swap?  Changing the stock front 31T pulley, to say a Warrior's 32T pulley, or Road* 33T??

Does it work any different or change the dynamics as compared to a rear pulley swap?

    ???

I did read a write-up a while back using the 33t pulley, but it is a major mod.  He had to cut out the center hubs of pulleys, weld the 33t to the Liners pulley hub, and had to grind the inside of the pulley cover for clearance.   Just seems like a lot of work for 200rpm's.

When I first got my Strat, it did seem buzzy at hwy speeds, but then again I had just come off a Roadstar with the 33 tooth.  Kind of got use to it over time, found my area of worst harmonic vibration @ rpm, so I just kind of gear around it for the best smoothest ride.  I don't think the vibes are due to throttle body synch, but more due to like any bike there is going to be a rpm that creates the worst harmonic vibration.  It is what it is.  My only major mod I plan to do is the re-flash from Ivan, getting tired of the up-shift shotgun blast.  It's just a matter when I can handle the down time, since there is no down time down here, and I ride 4 to 5 times a week.  Just got back from a 8 day 3k mile trip, and the bike ran ideal, as well as impressed with mpg's for such a monster of an engine.

Does the Warrior have the same splines as a Liner/Raider pulley? I thought I read the the Roadstar splines are different than the Liner/Raider.

The middle shaft thread size is M22, same as the Warrior and that the pulley will handle a 1-1/2" wide belt, which is the same P/N as the Roadliner/Stratoliner, but don't know about the splines...

The splines are different. That was the reason he had to cut and Weld.

Splines are different for the Roadstar 33T, but what about the Warrior 32T??

If a person manufactured a new sprocket do you guys think there would be a demand for it? If so how many do you think are out there. What I mean is before I got my Roadliner I only saw a few of them on the road. I’m sure the research could be done thru Yamaha. I am mostly just wondering what kind of numbers you all think is out there? I pretty much believe the reason there isn’t many used ones for sale is when we get them we keep them. I know I have had about 4 bikes and this is the first one I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one.

Anything that would add MPG, resolve the issue of me always looking for 6th gear or would just add more fuel to the tank that is measured in hundreds of dollars to complete the project would be welcome.

I have a 65 tooth sprocket in the garage waiting for a rear tire change. On the ECMU 2 I rode beside dgunner to check revs, he has a 65t
It didn't seem like his revs were that much lower. Imperfect test, his speedo is MPH and mine is KPH, will probably install it and see.
I don't think MPG would be improved that much if at all. Thoughts?

In terms of RPM vs MPH, the pulley will result in just over 7% difference.  This is easily confirmed with basic math.

In terms of fuel consumption, the RPM is a little lower and that reduces the amount of fuel being burned.  On the other hand, at any given speed the amount of drag is always the same no matter what RPM the engine is spinning.  Basically there is a small improvement in fuel economy but it's less than the 7% change in RPM.

Did anyone ever confirm if the ROAD WARRIOR front sprocket would bolt up with no mods on the Stratoliner? From what I recall 1 tooth up = 3 teeth in the back and where not as ideal as the 65T Harley conversion would be easier to do if splines matched up.

Crap. 13 tooth spline for road warrior and 17 on Strat/Road and Raider. Going with the 65tooth rear and will update too.

I knew a guy who did just that, but he milled the splines out of the warrior pulley then milled the pulley off of the liner splines and welded the two together.
