Some thoughts on insurance
« on: September 25, 2016, 11:56:24 am »
This is something we don't like to talk about but I thought I would throw a couple of thoughts out there, just some thought and reflections from my experience with motorcycle and medical insurance.
On the bike if you have a rider covering "custom Parts" added to the bike and you are in a no fault situation be prepared for a fight because they will only look at the replacement cost of the bike, at least that is the situation in GEICO's policy. So when one renews you might want to get clarification on this part. In my case I had an additional 3K in custom part coverage and I documented over 6K in added custom parts but the best I could do was get 2K in additional money above the replacement cost of the bike. Now if you are riding down the road and a big rock goes through the faring they will cover the replacement minus your deductible but in the case of a totaled bike it does not count the same.

On medical before I took off for the ECMU 4 I received an opportunity to get Air Evac insurance and I just about purchased it but decided it was not something I needed, $180 for a year to cover anyone that lives in your home. My helicopter flight 49 mikes round trip from a level 3 to a level 2 trauma hospital was just a bit over 41K. We are waiting to see if our medical insurance is going to cover it we think it will but right now am not sure. So we all know that we are careful and safe but sometimes things end up out of our control so if your state offers air/evac insurance which by the way can be used in every state that offers the coverage it might be something to look, at the cost truly outweighs the expense and multiple year coverage even drops the cost a lot. Any way I just wanted to through these two things out there after leaning the hard way. Ride safe and enjoy life.

Yes round trip for the chopper billed for me 101 miles a bit over 41K. I have to say I'm still considering it now even a ride from my home in the case if an injury at my house which is 18 miles from the hospital could be well over 25K.

A small accident with a ride in an ambulance can easily eat up the standard 10k. I carry 25/50 med coverage but always hope my  luck holds out and never have to use it.
