Better Seat!
« on: September 23, 2017, 07:57:43 PM »
Okay - somebody has to know - I need to lower my Strat with an after market seat. Have read the forums and there are many opinions. Hoped to condense and get opinions from Strat owners. I have a 2006 and it is all stock. I need to know who makes the most comfortable reduced height seat out there. Mustang - Pacific Coast - Ultimate Seats??? The opinions vary as to whether there is a height reduction or not. And there is the comfort question. The "potato chip" sounded good but some say they cannot sit in it for over an hour. I ride 4 to 8 hours usually. 5' 5" and 150 pounds - but I can be mean! I prefer to not use a frame lowering kit - have installed the Michelin Commander II - that gave me about 1/2 an inch. Thanks in advance.

I've spent a small fortune on seats to help make my bikes fit me better. Yamaha has deiced to make all of their cruisers with a flying C riding position. After an hour or so I need to take a break. I put bars, foot boards and tried 4 different seats to make my Raider fit me better but even then .. not so much. I just started putting modding stuff on the Stratoliner to make it fit me better but realize it is what it is. I'll never take it on longer than one day rides because the forward leg resting position gets uncomfortable after a while and gives me hip pain the next day.. ( I hate getting older )
Now.... I have a friend that owns a Kawasaki Concours and the seating position is WAY better.  Even though this looks like a sport bike, the leg position puts the foot more under your knee. With the addition of bar extensions, the bike feels great! Long hauls are a breeze.

I've had the dream to take a tour of the US on a bike for years. After the past 8 years riding Raiders and Stratoliners I believe another brand or... the new Venture ( Hadn't been on one yet ) will be required to make such a long trek..

OK now to the seat question at hand..... You can get a gel kit off of ebay to mod your seat. I have Danny Gray Ultimate seats and it takes a bit of work to get the foam cut out right. If you have a grinder fitted with a wood sanding disk it get much easier to do. Anyway, I used to get seat fatigue pretty quick, ( remember I'm old ) but the gel seat really works... I can go much farther without leg or buttox fatigue.  Just my .02 cents worth.

Thanks, madcow. I am "older" myself but beats the alternative! I can sit in the seat for several hours but am unable to put my feet flat when stopped unless I scoot way forward. Once moving, I scoot back. I am taking the advice of turtleman and sending a seat to TN for modification. The Strat is a great bike - I want to stay with it for a while.
Stay safe and take that trip!

I have two Corbins and while I love them both they don't lower much if at all. But before I was able to purchase them I had my stock seat cut down 2-1/2 inches the hollowed out the center and had a gel pad installed flush so as to not gain any height back, the result.... an all day seat that was lower.

Thanks, shifhappy6. Great suggestion - I will discuss that with the guy doing my seat. Several gel seat combos have been suggested by friends, etc. but that only added height! I like the insert idea.

Shifthappy6 - I did exactly that and it is an awesome seat. The gel pad is about an inch thick and covers the entire are where I sit. Have a similar post going (seat height adjustment) and got many good suggestions - thanks to all.

On the original seat - popped out the staples - got a bread knife and trimmed most of the foam back- rough sanding after too smooth out - then got a upholsterer to put carbon fibre vinyl on the sides and alacantra on the top! Turned out good - feet now flat  and rideable for 30 minutes!

I will say the most comfortable seat I've ever had was the Ultimate, it hands down beats every other seat I've ever had including the all of the aftermarket seats on my Harleys.

Cold in KY - 32 and sinking. Time to pull into the basement for some routine attention.

Update to anyone interested - I have well over 1400 miles on the "new" seat and it has pretty much solved my issues. I can now get flat footed with a small amount of effort and the seat is comfortable for 6 hours plus. The gel insert sits on about a 1/4 inch of the original foam and is better than the stock seat. Can't say enough good about "Sabine" - www.uniquedesignsupholstery.com in Brooks, KY. Check out her site.

Thanks to all for the seat input.
