if you have the mp3 hooked up, I think the only thing that will work is volume. nothing else.
Not even sure about that.
I dumped the mp3 and went back to ipod

Need some more info on what type of MP3 player you're using. The Deluxe was designed for an iPod.

I had a 2010 and I used the Ipod Nano generation 4. everything works right from the controller. volume, next track, previous track. I bought mine used cheap and did a factory reset on my computer with iTunes. Works great!

Dependent on what type of iPod, I had really bad luck with my Classic, (which I needed for the space), until I had it upgraded with flash memory. Before the upgrade it would skip and stop playing fairly frequently, which I assume had to do with having a disk drive and the bumps/vibrations from the road.

If the cable that came with the Deluxe fits into the iPod, it should charge. The only ones that won't are the new iPods which have a different style connector, (the new connector is completely different and the Deluxe's iPod cable won't come close to fitting in it).

If your iPod charges with any other cable, regardless of whether it's plugged into the computer or wall outlet, there's definitely potential it's something with the bike and not with the iPod.

Get that iPod I talked about. It plugs right in to the bike 30 pin connector and everything works and it keeps it charged. You can set up playlists, shuffle music mode, it even has different sound effects. Example: you can set it for Rock, Jazz, Blues, etc.  this is like a built in equalizer.
Mine works great and no need to spend a lot of money. Go with a used one.

One last thing. It fits right in perfectly. One thing I did do was purchased the glove box from Yamaha so I can leave the iPod on the bike and no one can see it.

My iPod will not play thru the speakers. It will charge. What could be wrong?

They do make a 30 pin to lightening adapter cable, used it for my iPhone 5 and worked fine. See attached photo for iPod vs GPS mode and how to select it. (Note: taken from 2014 Stratoliner Deluxe owners manual)
